Attention House Builders and Developers: Are you ready to switch to Heat Pumps?

The 2050 net zero goal is no unknown anymore, with the Government introducing more plans for the Green Industrial Revolution. One major plan which will have a significant impact on housebuilders and developers is that all new homes will be expected to be fitted with heat pumps from 2025. And in fact, some changes are coming next year that will dramatically favour heat pumps over gas boilers. So, are you ready to switch to heat pumps?

At Alto Energy we have already worked with self-builders, installers and developers for years, with the sole aim of making heat pumps as easy as possible for new builds. Our unique business model has been designed with developers in mind, so if you aren’t sure where to start, please read on to find out more about the upcoming changes, and how we can help you start your transition to heat pumps.

Updates to the Building Regulations

To achieve net zero, new build housing is seen as a key target to achieve zero emissions as soon as possible. The houses we build this decade are going to be occupied in 2050. Rather than increase the size of the job retrofitting Britain’s homes to get them to zero emissions, the Government is keen to get started with new builds right away.

By 2025, all new build homes will be expected to be net zero, and as part of this the standard specification for a new home in the Building Regulations will include a heat pump, not a boiler. And as part of the step change towards the 2025 target, updated Building Regulations will be introduced later this year. This update is expected to significantly favour heat pumps over boilers, due to the rapid decarbonisation of the UK electricity grid, meaning the electricity consumed by heat pumps is increasingly green.

NEW BUILDING REGULATIONS FOR 2022?

The Government has recently published it’s long anticipated consultation response about the up and coming Future Homes Standard, as well as more imminent changes to the building regulations now planned for 2022. These updates will have a huge impact on the choices developers make about the specification of new homes. Is it finally time for heat pumps to become the norm in new builds?
