How Much Do Air Source Heat Pumps Usually Cost?

According to recent research, 56% of UK builders aren’t able to advise on heat pumps. You might find it difficult to know where to turn if seeking information on this technology, including how much it costs.

Luckily, Alto Energy is always available to provide advice on all types of heat pumps, their design, installation and benefits. We also cover all aspects of the designing and fitting process.

One of the biggest questions people have when it comes to heat pumps is the cost.

Although heat pumps usually cost more than a gas boiler, there are various grants which are available to homeowners and owners of non-domestic buildings in England and Wales.

The price of heat pumps varies significantly depending on various factors. That includes the type of heat pump, its capacity and brand, installation requirements, and any additional components you need. Generally, air source heat pumps are cheaper than ground source heat pumps.

In 2022, the government launched a five-year scheme to help homeowners get access to heat pumps. The BUS (boiler upgrade scheme) is designed to help people make the leap to environmentally-friendly heating methods. It enables you to get up to £7,500 for your heat pumps.

What do I need to be eligible for a grant?

Your property should have an eligible Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) which has been issued in the last 10 years. However, new rules mean your home will no longer be required to have a current loft or cavity wall insulation.

Here are some of the other criteria which apply:

  • You must install a low-carbon heating system. Both air source and ground source heat pumps are eligible.

  • The heat pump must replace an oil, gas, or other fossil fuel or electric heating system. Alternatively, if this is the property's first heating system (e.g. an eligible self-build project), this will qualify.

  • The heat pump must provide a complete heating and hot water solution to your property.

  • The capacity of the heat pump must be 45kW or below.

  • The project must be completed by an MCS approved installer like Alto Energy.

Here at Alto Energy we specialise in ground and air source pumps, including those from Samsung, IVT, and Mitsubishi.
