Heat pump support for Scottish heating engineers
Start at Home Scotland gives heating engineers and installers the opportunity to build practical heat pump experience by fitting one in their own home.
If you're working in the heating industry and thinking about moving into heat pumps, installing one at home can be a useful way to get first-hand experience of the technology. You get to live with the system yourself, understand how it operates day to day and experience the process from a homeowner's point of view.
The Energy Saving Trust is hosting a free webinar on Wednesday 7 October from 4.30pm to 5.30pm to explain how Nesta's Start at Home scheme works in Scotland, including the support available to installers and potential funding through Home Energy Scotland.
Our Business Development Manager, George Greening, will also be joining the session as one of the speakers.
What is Start at Home?
Start at Home is a Nesta initiative designed to help heating engineers and installers gain practical experience with heat pumps by fitting one in their own home.
The idea is fairly simple. Rather than learning about heat pumps solely through training or working on customers' properties, installers can gain experience by having a system installed at home.
That means getting to know how a heat pump works in real life, including what it's like to live with the system, understand its controls and see how it performs as part of your own heating system.
For installers who are considering moving into heat pumps, that practical experience can be particularly useful.
How does the incentive work in Scotland?
The upcoming webinar will explain how the scheme works and what support is available for plumbers and heating engineers in Scotland.
It will also cover how funding through the Home Energy Scotland Grant and Loan could help with the cost of making the switch to clean heating.
The exact support available will depend on the circumstances of the installation and the relevant scheme requirements, so the webinar is a useful opportunity to understand what is currently available.
Who is speaking at the webinar?
The webinar brings together people involved in the initiative, including our Business Development Manager, George Greening.
We've already been involved in delivering a number of Start at Home projects, so George will be able to share some of our experience of how the scheme works in practice and what we've seen from the installer side.
He'll be joined by Cate Urbano, Senior Analyst at Nesta, and Rachel Comrie, Assistant Programme Manager at the Green Heat Installer Engagement Programme.

We’re also running heat pump training in Scotland
Start at Home is available to installers in Scotland, as well as England and Wales, but not every company involved in the wider scheme offers the incentive to installers north of the border.
We do, and we're also running a special heat pump training session in Scotland with McDonald Water Storage on Tuesday 17 November.
